Reman Industry Size and ScopeAlthough estimates vary on the size and scope of the current remanufacturing industry, a recent analysis performed at Boston University found 73,000 remanufacturing firms operating in the United States. Together, these firms are a major force in the economy, representing $53 billion in annual sales and 480,000 in direct employment. The $36 billion a year vehicle parts rebuilding industry is especially strong -- 70-90% of the goods sold in the motor vehicle aftermarket have been remanufactured. Not included in the Boston University study is the largest single remanufacturer in the world - the U.S. Department of Defense that derives significant cost savings by remanufacturing weapons systems and military equipment ranging from aircraft carriers to rifles. The remanufacturing industry is made up of companies operating in a number of product sectors meeting specific market needs. The industry is served by trade associations that represent the interest of remanufacturing companies operating in a specific product area. Back to Reman Overview |
